The introduction of Tourism Tax in the UK – what could it mean for local councils?

Councils across the UK will need to ensure any tourism taxes they propose maintain their competitiveness in the market, and they will need to provide clarity to stakeholders on how the funds will be used, says Rory Alexander.

As conversation heats up around Edinburgh potentially becoming the first city in the UK to introduce a tourism tax, it's clear that the Scottish Government has a lot to consider before they make a legislative decision.

The tax, which would raise about £11m per annum for the capital, would be used to manage some of the impacts of the booming tourism sector in Edinburgh.
