The managing director of upmarket department store chain John Lewis, Andy Street, has been appointed lead non-executive director of the Department for Communities and Local Government. He will take over from Sara Weller when she steps down at the end of the year.

Mr Street joined the John Lewis Partnership as a graduate trainee in 1985 and has been in his present role since 2007.
