Joint initiative to target illegal immigrant fraud

The UK Border Agency will share information in 'real time' with the National Fraud Initiative (NFI),to combat fraudulent credit applications.

The UK Border Agency will share information in ‘real time' with the Audit Commission's National Fraud Initiative (NFI), as part of a joined-up approach to combating fraudulent credit applications by illegal immigrants.

Giving banks and credit agencies ready access to check the immigration status of applicants represents the first phase in a planned expansion of the NFI service which the commission claims has identified £750m in fraud and overpayments since 1996.
