The Government has appointed former bi-borough chief executive Derek Myers and Newcastle City Council chief executive Pat Ritchie as joint chairs of an independent panel to review obstacles to transforming public service delivery.

Due to report to ministers by autumn, the Service Transformation Challenge Panel will make recommendations on what changes are needed at local and national level to accelerate and enlarge the transformation of public services.

Derek Myers told The MJ the Treasury and DCLG had asked himself and Ms Ritchie to give advice to Government and the sector on how to make public services more responsive in adjusting to a new fiscal climate, with an emphasis of making local services work for residents.
