Keeping it together

The next five years are going to test some of the fundamental principles of local government, so entrepreneurialism and community advocacy will be key, writes Paul O'Brien.

Over the past few months, the Association for Public Service Excellence (APSE) and our academic partners have been looking at what the future role of elected members will be between now and 2020 – and sadly the forecast is for stormy waters.

During the next five years we are likely to see even tougher financial settlements for local government than the last five, which those of us who have lived through that period will find it hard to comprehend
