The most senior official at the Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG) has defended the amount of information Whitehall collects on councils' finances.

Sir Bob Kerslake insisted it was ‘almost impossible' for his department to reach a precise view about the amount of funding needed by each local authority as he clashed with straight-talking public accounts committee chair Margaret Hodge.
