Labour plans 'living wage' for city staff

The new Labour administration at Birmingham City Council is planning to introduce a 'living wage' for 3,000 of its low-paid workers.

The new Labour administration at Birmingham City Council is planning to introduce a ‘living wage' for 3,000 of its low-paid workers, with the aim of writing it into future council contracts.

Under the plan, to be discussed in cabinet next week, the lowest hourly rate for 2,500 council staff and 500 school employees would be increased from £6.39 to £7.20 from 1 July.
