Labour's policy vacuum means another coalition

Failure to win battle of ideas in run up to General Election could give Lib Dems role as Westminster kingmakers again, writes MJ editorial director, Michael Burton

I seem to recall that Labour's policy review led by Jon Cruddas earlier this year was going to deliver a suitcase full of exciting new ideas which would be aired at the Labour conference ready to form the election manifesto. Instead, we had the lamentable idea of the unworkable mansion tax.

Even the Liberal Democrats have rowed back on it, preferring the more practical route of adding on new layers of council tax bands to generate more tax revenue.
