The county council elections in May, with 27 counties and seven unitaries up for grabs, will be a fiercely-fought contest as Labour seeks to capitalise on its opinion poll lead and, with control over every county bar one, the Conservatives have most to lose.

Indeed, Labour expects to pick up some counties which had been previously Labour until the pro-Conservative swing in the last county elections in 2009 when Gordon Brown was PM.
