Late-night licensing: nirvana or nightmare?

In The MJ last week, Claire Fox said councils and their over-zealous approach to licensing was to blame for the spate of late-night venue closures including – most recently – Fabric. But is it really councils’ fault? James Evison investigates

As London nightclub Fabric closes its doors due to Islington LBC's decision to revoke its licence, its fame has shone a light on the late-night sector's dire state. The figures are alarming.

In 2005, there were 3,144 clubs. Now it is half that – and it is only going in one direction.
