Why has no left of centre party attracted support like UKIP?

Michael Burton asks why Farage's followers are making all the runnning getting the anti-capitalist protest vote.

There has been widespread analysis of UKIP but the main conclusion is that to brand it as a party of racists and bigots is to simplify a complex electoral phenomenon.

Its core support comes from voters who feel left out by the march of progress and increasingly resentful of what they see as vested interests with their snouts in the trough.
