A fierce row is raging about screening women for breast cancer. Screening is an apparently simple idea and is now public policy across England and Wales. The aim is to pick up women at risk, plant them in treatment programmes and reduce the chances of any cancer spreading, cutting the need for costly surgery and damping down cancer death rates.
