Both Labour and the Conservatives must look to local government for solutions to the challenges they face, writes Sir Bob Neill

‘You were only supposed to blow the bloody doors off.' Michael Caine's iconic line from The Italian Job came to mind as the General Election results came in.

Rishi Sunak's gamble on damage limitation (the poll in July can never have been more than that) had backfired more spectacularly than anyone seriously imagined, and our electoral system had given Keir Starmer a massive Commons majority on a pretty meagre popular mandate. Both situations present new challenges.
