Lessons for local government in the wake of Carillion

Andy Burns offers some advice for the sector following the collapse of the outsourcing giant.

Carillion went into liquidation owing £1.7bn and held £29m in cash that was insufficient to service this debt. Uncertainty remains about the impact on over 400 public sector contracts and thousands of jobs.

The majority of local government services impacted (such as school meals, road-gritting and facilities management) have continued un-interrupted; a testament to the robustness of councils business continuity plans.
