LGA calls for curbs on 'bookies'

The Local Government Association has called for councils to be given more powers to stop high streets being taken over by betting shops.

The Local Government Association (LGA) has called for councils to be given more powers to stop high streets being taken over by betting shops and fast food outlets.

Speaking to the House of Commons' culture, media and sport committee, the LGA's chair of the environment and housing board, Cllr David Parsons, said councils need new planning powers to prevent such shops from opening if they are likely to cause a public nuisance.
