Local areas should be allowed to opt-out of government home extension reforms and maintain existing planning controls, council leaders have said.

The Local Government Association (LGA) has warned that government plans to remove the need for planning consent or consultation on certain single storey extensions could ‘open the floodgates' to thousands of unsuitable properties, and has urged MPs to permit councils to avoid the changes.
