Senior Conservative council chiefs angrily hit out today at national Party figures and ministers over plans to strip councillors of their entitlement to town hall pensions.

Sir Merrick Cockell, chair of the Local Government Association (LGA) and Conservative group leader Cllr Gary Porter both found common cause with their political rivals in launching a vehement attack against remarks made earlier today by Conservative Party chairman Grant Shapps and local government minister Brandon Lewis.
