LGA hails European demand for English councils' freedoms

Council chiefs welcome report from the Council of Europe (CoE) recommending greater devolution of powers and fairer funding settlement.

Council chiefs have today hailed a report from the Council of Europe (CoE) which recommends English councils should enjoy a greater devolution of powers, increased freedom to raise taxes and a fairer funding settlement.

The delegation from the 47 member nation CoE's Congress, which has oversight for local democracy, reported the ability of councils to deliver essential public services is under huge pressure.
