Councillors have put Smith Square under pressure to lobby the Government to give local authorities the power to decide whether to charge students council tax, The MJ understands.

A number of councillors on the Local Government Association's (LGA) Labour-chaired city regions board are believed to be keen for the exemption for full-time students to be removed.
