Link council tax rises to the RPI

The equitable solution, is to take council tax out of the political arena altogether by linking it to RPI, says Michael Burton.

Communities secretary Eric Pickles had another go at council tax rises this week. Yet they are hardly rises at all, being mainly under 2%, despite the impact of RPI inflation of 2.6%, plus extra demand costs, such as a rising birth rate, adult care and waste disposal.

Meanwhile, the Government is happy to let train operators pass on fare increases of double that, while energy costs continue to soar.
