Liverpool strides to walk alone

The leader and chief executive of Liverpool City Council talk to Heather Jameson about the authority’s improvement journey and why they are ready for a new focus on public sector reform.

Liverpool is internationally recognised as a city of great cultural and musical heritage, but in local government terms its reputation has been mired in controversy in recent years. From major arrests to intervention, its downfall has been well documented, right through to the end of formal intervention in the summer.

Liverpool City Council leader Cllr Liam Robertson began his role in May 2023, amid the intervention, and was joined by chief executive Andrew Lewis shortly afterwards. He says they have made huge strides since then.
