Former chair of the Parliamentary Labour Party, Tony Lloyd, has beaten Wigan MBC leader Lord Peter Smith, in the contest to be appointed interim mayor of Greater Manchester.

Mr Lloyd, who is currently the Police and Crime Commissioner for Greater Manchester, a post that will be subsumed within the new mayoral responsibility for the combined authority, will serve in post until the first direct elections take place in June 2017.

During the mini-campaign to secure the appointment, made by the individual leaders of the ten councils that comprise the Greater Manchester combined authority area, Mr Lloyd pledged to take only one salary when combining the roles.
