Local devo deals would give counties the levers

Anthony May says we need the long-awaited devolution framework and it must set out a clear blueprint offering flexibility on models and governance, while making it clear what the rules are and what is on offer.

Local government has come out of the national political wilderness in recent months, with the chancellor offering some short-term financial comfort for councils, alongside a fresh wave of enthusiasm for devolution.

While genuine decentralisation seems a long way off, we should seek to capitalise on this change of narrative – especially with the devolution agenda having run out of stream in most areas of the country.
