LOCAL DEMOCRACY

Local elections should be about local issues

This year’s polls are of unprecedented importance for the district sector, says Cllr Sam Chapman-Allen. His strong hope is that 4 May will be about local issues rather than Prime Ministerial fortunes.

The electoral cycle gives each year's local government elections a certain theme. All-out elections and four-year terms meant that 2021 was county council year and 2022 was London borough year.

However, the prevalence of election by thirds has meant that for district councils, like metropolitan and unitary councils, there hasn't been a point in the cycle at which they have held the limelight to such a great extent.
