Let local government deliver May's vision

Heather Jameson takes some of the key messages from her interview with Dame Louise Casey and calls on local government to show it can deliver for everyone.

Theresa May has taken her first steps towards delivering ‘a Britain that works for everyone' – her key prime ministerial promise – with a pledge to tackle the impact of ethnicity on life chances.

The data lays out the stark realities of racial inequality in the UK. And while local government scores well on its recruitment of BAME staff – better than other public services at least – let's not be too self-congratulatory. Other research, by recruiters Green Park, has highlighted the lack of BAME chief executives in unitary authorities.
