Local government employment is now the lowest for at least 16 years, according to figures from the Office for National Statistics published today.

Local government employment is now the lowest for at least 16 years, according to figures from the Office for National Statistics published today.

In September this year UK local authorities employed 2,257,000 staff - a drop of 12,000 over the previous quarter or 72,000 over the previous year and the lowest figure since 1999.
