Local government goes with a big bang

If Greg Clark's claims are right, local government faces a renaissance. Let's see true fiscal freedom and devolution for councils to match, says Heather Jameson

Change may come through evolution, but that takes thousands of years. Most real rapid transition needs a big bang, and right now the local government universe keeps exploding.

The Scottish referendum kick-started devolution – in England as well as the devolved nations – in a way that never seemed possible. Now we have the fallout of the EU referendum – and if Greg Clark's mood music at the LGA conference is anything to go by, local government is to be pushed further into the fore.
