Much of the attention about the impact of Brexit on the UK economy has focused on the private sector, yet local government also has a direct stake in seeing a deal agreed that has no negative impact on its services. Its areas of concern are loosely immigration and workforce, EU laws, the future of EU-funded projects and the wider public finances.

Reflecting fears that over the next two years local government's voice may be drowned out by more vociferous industry lobbies, the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy today announced the creation of a commission with a brief to ‘explore the impact of the Brexit negotiation options on public services so that the government fully consider the needs of the sector.' It argues that ‘while there will rightly be focus on sectors such as financial services, manufacturing, retail and energy, the impact on public services should be equally highlighted for public debate and ministerial consideration.'
