Local government lawyers: filling the age gaps

Councils are struggling to recruit experienced lawyers due to the impact of historical cost cutting, and the sector is not training the next generation. Deborah Evans looks at what can be done.

The recent Lawyers in Local Government (LLG) member survey has shone a spotlight on an issue very particular to law in local government – the ageing demographic of our lawyers.

Lawyers working within local government have a very different age profile to that of the wider legal sector. The mode age is an impressive 45-54 years old, compared to the mode age of 25-34 for all solicitors in practice according to the Solicitors' Regulation Authority (SRA). That is a stark difference of 20 years. To many of you, this will be no surprise.
