Local government's finance community are left scratching their heads

Tony Kirkham hopes the Government looks at alternative ways of managing future transitions and firms up the services grant in order to give a greater level of planning certainty.

It's time to get our heads up and look beyond the current wave of COVID cases and update our medium-term financial plans.

The Spending Review is helpful, giving a three-year perspective and front-loaded allocation to local government. However, the provisional local government finance settlement adds a layer of doubt in future years and, with the introduction of the one-off services grant, has got those in the finance community scratching their heads.
