CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE

Local investment will tackle childhood obesity

There is much more that councils, the NHS and partner bodies can do to support residents battle looming youth obesity epidemic, writes Cllr Rachael Robathan.

In this modern, busy world, more and more of us are finding it difficult to keep active, eat well and maintain a healthy weight. Nationally, almost two-thirds of adults and one- third of children under 18 are overweight or obese. The Chief Medical Officer highlights that in one study, 77% of parents of overweight children did not recognise that their child was overweight.

Not only that, studies show that obesity costs £47bn a year to the UK economy and is a greater burden than armed violence, war and terrorism and is second only to smoking in terms of its impact on the UK's purse strings.
