Local 'mansion tax' band unlikely

Chancellor George Osborne has ruled out the creation of two new top-level council tax bands or a 'mansion tax' in next month's budget.

Chancellor George Osborne has, it seems, ruled out the creation of two new top-level council tax bands or a 'mansion tax' in next month's budget, a weekend press report has claimed.

While the Liberal Democrats believe the measure would enable the Treasury to raise the income tax threshold to £10,000, Conservative ministers oppose the measure - which would breach Tory manifesto commitment no to revalue homes for council tax.
