Give locals a seat at the table

Providing MPs the ability to scrutinise policy implemented by combined authorities does nothing to bring power closer to communities, argues Courtney Stephenson.

Many will herald the trailblazer devolution deals unveiled in the chancellor's spring budget as a victory for levelling up, for local policymaking and for mayors called Andy.

We, at Demos, would be minded to agree – to a point. While the profile raising operation of the West Midlands and Greater Manchester mayors has undoubtedly had a positive impact for their respective regions, we would urge commentators and policymakers alike to look closely at some of the details in the deals before cracking open the champagne.
