There's still a long way to go to solve the audit issue

Heather Jameson says local government minister Lee Rowley's proposals for dealing with the audit backlog are a step towards tackling problems highlighted by the excellent 2020 Redmond review. But there is still a long way to go.

As the latest round of councils reveal they are teetering on the brink of financial insolvency, it has become almost irrelevant whether the reason is incompetence or underfunding. Either way, the results are the same: council collapse.

The Government's widely-lauded attempt to catch councils before they fall – Oflog – has so far amounted to little more than a recycling league table.
