Medium-sized cities and smaller urban areas must not be ignored at the expense of larger northern city regions, new research has argued.

In a presentation today to the Royal Geographical Society's annual international conference, Professor Graham Haughton, of the University of Manchester, will claim smaller urban areas like Milton Keynes, Cambridge and Warrington have actually experienced higher levels of economic growth on many indicators.
