A lost decade has hit the public finances

Almost a decade after the recession began we are still living with its consequences, writes Michael Burton.

Compared to pre-2008, GDP per capita is barely 2% above its 2008 level; in other words it has taken nine years to achieve what would normally be reached in one year.

The impact on the public finances is obvious; imagine how much extra spending the chancellor would have available had there been no recession and GDP had continued rising each year since 2008.
