Making turn around work

Unsatisfactorily high reoffending rates among boys aged under 18 have prompted a groundbreaking work placement scheme, writes Alaina Tolhurst

The latest Children in Custody report, published by HM Inspectorate of Prisons and the Youth Justice Board (YJB) in 2014, showed that nine out of 10 of sentenced boys in youth offending institutions said they wanted to stop offending.

Yet, despite these good intentions Ministry of Justice (MoJ) figures show that 68% of young offenders aged under-18, leave custody and go on to re-offend within just 12 months. Among the reasons they give for this are a lack of opportunities available to train, develop, or support themselves financially through honest means.
