Management of benefit claimants' medical checks 'must be tighter'

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) urged to improve management of controversial medical assessments.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) must tighten the ‘unacceptably loose' management' of controversial medical assessments used to check disabled people's benefit entitlements, MPs have reported.

According to a National Audit Office study, Atos Healthcare invoiced the DWP for £112m after completing 738,000 face-to-face medical inspections with claimants either seeking employment and support allowance (ESA) or reassessment of existing claims for incapacity benefit in 2011/12.
