Manchester leader scoops prestige award

Sir Richard Leese, leader of Manchester City Council, was last night honoured as local government's leader of the year.

Sir Richard Leese, leader of Manchester City Council, was last night honoured as local government's leader of the year at the Local Government Information Unit's 'C'llr' awards ceremony hosted by Westminster City Council.

Described as 'a titanic figure in local government', Cllr Leese was praised for pioneering a strategic approach to regeneration in the aftermath of the IRA bombing of Manchester city centre in 1996.
