Town hall bosses have criticised government plans to introduce mandatory reporting of suspected child abuse because they believe it will not offer youngsters more protection.

In a joint submission to a government consultation, the Local Government Association and the Association of Directors of Children's Services, said mandatory reporting would fail to address the ‘current challenges' involved with protecting children.
