The election may still be more than two-and-a-half years away, but you can be sure that even now, chancellor George Osborne's team is poring over Treasury stats to work out how to ensure the economy is in the best-possible shape for May 2015.

That means making decisions now so that they can bear fruit just in time for polling day.
