Whitehall departments may save up to £3bn a year from the centralised purchasing of common goods and services, Francis Maude announced today.

An efficiency study by retail tycoon Sir Philip Green published before last October's spending review showed examples of central government's failure to make use of its combined spending power and credit rating to secure better commercial deals.
