Do mayors herald the answer to a new era?

Even before voters hit the polls to elect metro mayors today, commentators have warned of poor turnout. Heather Jameson argues what mayors will do for the democracy of tomorrow is more important.

As the public heads to the polls in some parts of the UK, electoral staff will be working hard to ensure the democratic process runs smoothly. Good luck to them all and let's hope there are no major hiccups along the way.

As ever on the eve of elections, there has been much soul-searching over democracy and voter apathy. Everyone from a disengaged public to Theresa May – or at least her snap election – has been blamed for a poor turnout before we even got to the ballot box today.
