Jeremy Corbyn has welcomed the selection of Oldham Council leader Jim McMahon as Labour's candidate to stand in a parliamentary by-election.

Mr McMahon last night fought off competition from three other candidates to be selected to stand in the Oldham West and Royton by-election, triggered by the death of Michael Meacher last month.
