Meet the new breed of sustainable bonds

UK local authorities are well placed to access the capital markets through Envrionmental, Social and Governance bonds, and the range of projects they can fund is vast, says Christian Wall.

The chancellor's Budget announced the Government will issue a ‘Green Gilt' during 2021, a move much welcomed by investors. However, this is merely the latest development in what is a burgeoning market for Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) bonds.

Companies, agencies and municipalities in the UK, Europe and even the US have issued ESG bonds to good effect for some years. So, what are ESG bonds and why are they gaining importance?
