'Mending the roof when the sun is shining' won't cut it for voters

MJ editorial director Michael Burton says public won't buy into ever-greater austerity measures after 2015 if economy keeps improving.

If pessimism is the new reality when it comes to local government finances then chief executives and their directors of resources are well on-message.

Having warned about the impact of spending cuts in 2015/16 they are now increasingly concerned about the year after, 2016/17, which is shaping up to be a real challenge.

The question is whether the improving economy may take some of the pressure off local government budgets in two years time.
