Local government experts have warned public demand for directly-elected mayors has 'stalled across the country' after Middlesbrough Council voted to hold a referendum on whether or not to continue with the post.

Councillors voted at a full council meeting on 3 April to hold the referendum in September on the future of the system, once the current term ends in May 2015.
