Women in the UK are on average paid nearly 20% less per hour than men, according to the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IfS). This has changed little in the last 10 years and is the fourth largest gap in Europe.

The IfS says the gender wage gap ‘opens up markedly' around the time women have children – when many start working closer to home or switch to part-time work.
