Ministers must address rural funding gap, campaigners urge

Report claims countryside councils pay 'rural penalty' of lower central grant and higher council tax bills for fewer services.

Countryside communities are locked into a decade's funding unfairness under which they get a lower central grant and pay more council tax for fewer services, according to rural campaigners.

A report undertaken by Local Government Futures for the Rural Services Network (RSN), shows urban authorities receive 50% more funding per head, £487 compared with £324 in rural areas.
