Ministers are considering plans to add an extra council tax band for the country's most expensive properties, according to weekend press reports.

The move is one of a series of measures being explored to resolve Coalition tax-raising tensions, balancing the Lib Dem's desire to impose a 'mansion tax' for houses worth more than £2m and the Conservatives wish to scrap the 50% tax rate for people earning over £150,000 a year.
